The City of Sacramento has been recognized with the 2026 Beacon Leadership Award due to its partnership with the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) aimed at making the transportation system more resilient to climate change impacts. The recognition took place on Tuesday, October 13, during a Sacramento City Council meeting, where city staff were acknowledged for their efforts on the Sacramento Transportation Infrastructure Adaptation Plan, commonly referred to as SacAdapt. This initiative garnered the award in the Cross-Agency Collaboration in Climate Resilience and Adaptation category.
As described by City Manager Maraskeshia Smith, this distinction reflects the dedication and innovative approaches of the city’s staff in preparing Sacramento for future climate challenges. The jointly developed SacAdapt plan evaluates potential effects of extreme heat, flooding, and severe storms on the city’s infrastructure, suggesting strategies for improvement and prioritization of investments. Community engagement was instrumental in shaping the plan, with over 860 survey responses collected from local residents.
