City activates cooling centers Oct. 3-10

This article has been revised to indicate that cooling center operations have been extended until October 10. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory, prompting the City of Sacramento to open the Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC) and the North 5th Street Navigation Center as cooling sites for residents seeking relief from high temperatures.

The OEC, located at 3615 Auburn Blvd., will operate from 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 3 through 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 10. It can accommodate up to 50 guests and welcomes walk-ins. The center has storage facilities for personal belongings and accepts pets.

The North 5th Street Navigation Center, situated at 700 North Fifth St., will be open daily from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting Saturday, October 3 until Friday, October 9. This center can hold up to 20 adults but does not permit pets. Visitors are advised not to congregate or linger outside the shelter to ensure smooth operations.

Additionally, libraries and community centers will remain open during regular hours, serving as air-conditioned spaces for cooling off.

The City has teamed up with Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) to offer free transportation to and from the cooling centers throughout their operation. To obtain a free ride, riders should either take a screenshot or print the SacRT flyer and show it to the bus operator upon boarding or present it to light rail fare inspection staff when requested. This offer is only valid when traveling to and from the active weather respite centers.

Weather respite services are available to all community members. For assistance accessing these centers, individuals can contact 211 or visit their website for additional information.

The City will continue to watch the National Weather Service’s forecasts and may prolong the cooling center operations as necessary. They will also evaluate the capacity at each location to see if more facilities need to be activated.
