The City of Sacramento is set to receive a federal grant amounting to $99,500 to research the history of its Japanese American population. The funding will facilitate the documentation of oral histories and the preparation of National Register of Historic Places nominations for two significant buildings.
As part of the Japanese American Historic Experience Project, Sacramento will collaborate with the local community to identify and preserve places of historical importance. According to Sean de Courcy, the City’s preservation director, this initiative aims to enrich the understanding of the Japanese American community’s contributions to the city’s development. The project will also assess structures such as Ouye’s Pharmacy and the Dr. Arthur Trent Dentist Office, which are essential to the community’s narrative.
